Established in 1864, District Bar Association, Gujrat is one of the oldest Bar Associations in Indian Sub-Continent and is the district wide professional and regulatory organization for duly licensed lawyers. The Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Act, 1973, rules made there under and certain other relevant regulations govern the establishment and administration of this Bar Association. The President of the Association is responsible for ensuring due compliance of the constitution of the Bar Association. During the period of last 150 years this mother institution has given birth to six, now by their own right, independent bar associations i.e. M.B Din, Phalia, Malakwal, Kharian and Sarai Alamgir Bars. District Bar Association Gujrat has produced some of the greatest judges, lawyers of this part of Asia. Several judges of the higher courts have been members of the Association till their elevation to the Bench. Many members of the Association played a pivotal role in shaping the political destiny of Pakistan. A former President of Pakistan Mr. Fazal Ellahi Chaudhry and many others were among them. The Association gave the country some of the finest jurists—Hakim Chiragh Ali, Ch. Fatah Mohammad Aziz, Mr. B.Z Kahkaus, Ch. Dildar Khan and many other legends can safely be included in a very long list. The association has played a leading role in national movements like National Struggle for Freedom and a more recent Lawyer’s Movement for Rule of Law and Independence of Judiciary. The Association has preserved records, including minutes and correspondence, going back to the 1860’s. Much of this material is rich and will be of immense value to those interested in history. The Association functions from a large building in sprawling District Courts Compound. Computer, internet, fax and legal research facilities are available. Designated areas in the Association premises are available for holding conferences. With more than 150 years of dedicated service to stand on, District Bar Association, Gujrat is firmly rooted in the community as a steady and reliable bellwether.
